Soil Science Australia provides accreditation for suitably qualified members of the Society as Certified Professional Soil Scientists.

In 1996 the Australian Society of Soil Science Inc and the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology jointly developed the Standards for Professionals in Agriculture and Agri-Industry. In 2002 the Standards were modified for the Certified Professional Soil Scientist accreditation program and launched as the Standards for Professionals in Soil Science. The first accreditation handbook and guidelines for CPSS were printed in 2003.  The Standards have been regularly updated to reflect the changing needs of the profession. The current Standards were adopted in 2012 along with a strengthening of the accreditation application and assessment process.

Soil Science is a highly specialised field.   The CPSS program recognises the educational qualifications and professional competences required of a professional soil scientist.  Accreditation as a CPSS requires applicants to satisfy the Standards for Professionals in Soil Science, comply with the Society's Code of Ethics and Rules of Conduct, and demonstrate a commitment to on-going professional development.    The Society’s Code of Ethics provides a public statement of the principles, values and behaviour expected of all members of Soil Science Australia. The CPSS Rules of Conduct provide an interpretation and expansion of the Code of Ethics including expectations encompassing professional and personal conduct, competence, conflict of interest, confidentiality, client relationships, advertising, inducement for the introduction of clients, and the profession of soil science.   CPSSs are also required to demonstrate a minimum of 50 hours on on-going professional development annually.

CPSS's are recognised by their professional body as professionals who continually expand their knowledge and skills throughout their career, by seeking professional development opportunities.
